Subject: Re: Commemorative events in remembrance of the First World War
As this year sees the close of the commemorative events on the special anniversary of the First World War, I’ve received notification of several events and initiatives that may be of interest to Lions members within the district which are free to attend and be involved .

  1. The first of the events is a musical performance and readings to explore the experiences of mothers bereaved during the First World War (see attached) to be held on Thursday 6 September, beginning at 18.30 (entrance at 18.00) and closing at 19.30 in the Chancellor’s Hall, Senate House, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HU.   For Lions members to book their free ticket, please click here or RSVP to

This unique performance explores the universality of bereavement as the defining experience of the conflict, with a special focus on the impact on mothers – an overlooked aspect of grief from the period.
Through newly-composed pieces by acclaimed violinist and award-winning British composer Clare Connors, and powerful readings bringing to life the voices of mothers and their sons and daughters serving in the military, the performance explores their relationships, and the experience of a mother losing their child.
To join the Motherhood, Loss and the First World War community commemoration project, visit – small scale funding is available and a free resource pack is available for any club.

  1. A free keynote lecture by Professor Susan Grayzel open to the public as part of a conference being held on 5 September. You can book your free ticket at: for the ‘National Service, Personal Sacrifice: The Cultural Politics of Mourning Mothers during and after the First World War’.
  2. A range of World War I projects led by the Government working with an organisation named Big Ideas for Clubs to get involved.  The website and further details can be found at – small scale funding is available and the organisation are helpful to work with.
  3. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the Royal British Legion have been working on a project known as ‘Thank You 100’.  Anyone can leave a message of remembrance to those who contributed to the war effort, both through active Service and on the home front.  All messages received will be placed on special poppies to be planted at the National Memorial Arboretum.   Please click here to leave your message
  4. On the 11 November 2018 – bells of all kinds throughout the world – church, military or any other – are invited by the British Government with the support of the German Government to ring out at 12.30hrs.  There will be a People’s Procession of 10,000 members of the public who will have the opportunity to form a procession past the Cenotaph in central London, to pay tribute to those that served during the First World War.  To find out more and see events near to where you live, please visit

I’ve been involved with the commemorative events surrounding the Battle of the Somme on behalf of Lions and the events they put on were incredible.
As I’m made aware of more events and projects I’ll send these on to you to circulate throughout our MD.
Take care
