Your Convention 2018 …… Update News Bulletin, followed by the weekly news

  • Funeral for Lion John Cheetham
  • Food-bank
  • Salmon option for the B&B
  • Computer Tutorial session

Fellow Lions
This is a brief newsletter to update you on the 2018 (Norwich) Convention coming up in 12 days.

Firstly: Lion John Cheetham’s Funeral

As many will know, following the sad passing of our friend, guide and (frequently) mentor, Lion John Cheetham , his funeral is on the Convention Friday at 12.00 noon,
Funeral Service at Bretton Baptist Church,
We are sure that a lot will want to attend this funeral and Lion Martin is exploring possibilities of transport (and/or car sharing) from Norwich on March 16th . If you could drop him an email or phone call if you intend to go it would be really helpful.
The programme for the afternoon has been changed accordingly. There will be lunch as usual, then the two afternoon tutorials have been postponed, the cabinet meeting being moved to 6.00pm and the Host Night will start a little later at 7.30pm. If you have booked Friday lunch and won’t now be taking it, could you let Lion Martin know please, so that the hotel does not waste food.
David Large and Simon Smith of the tech team will be running a computing tutorial on Friday Afternoon to help Lions to get the best from their computers and to use them to support their clubs’ activities.
We’re looking at different ways of delivering the two postponed sessions.

Next: Feeding the 5000 …….. through the Norwich Foodbanks

We are still in our Centenary year and one of the international projects is ‘feeding the 5000’. As an part of this, we would like to invite everyone attending to bring a contribution for the Norwich food-bank.
We have been in contact with the Food Bank and they will be supplying crates and have told us what they ‘really really want’ to fill gaps, specifically:-

  • Long life puddings (sponges and the like)
  • Instant mash ( easy to store, easy to prepare, rapid carbohydrate)
  • Tinned fish
  • Washing powder

Other ‘long shelf life’ main course food items are also very welcome as is shower gel and soap.
A really big donation from us could make a big difference!

And then : The Banquet and Ball menu

By popular request we have added another choice to the main course for the Banquet part of the Banquet and Ball: we are now offering:
Salmon in Hollandaise sauce With, braised red cabbage, dauphinois potatoes and roasted carrots with rich jus.
Anyone who’s pallet is tickled by this option and would like to change to it could you please either email or phone Lion Martin Langdon (see below) and let him know as soon as possible ( next venue meeting is on Tuesday at 12).

Also: an update on the Host Night Menu

Vegetarian ( it’s also vegan) Haggis can easily be provided as can Gluten Free Haggis.  Lion Martin will be ordering this on Thursday so could you please let him know if you want to indulge by then.
Best wishes
Yours in Lionism
Jim Cawte and your Convention Committee

And now the weekly news

Our District Convention in Norwich is only 11 days away and this will present possibly the last chance to buy a Centennial Polo Shirt or the “Ordinary People Amazing Things” Polo Shirt. Stocks of both shirts are limited and these stocks are probably unlikely to be replenished before July 2019.
If you are attending Convention then you can save time and have certainty by pre-ordering your Shirts by e-mailing your size requirements to  Then all you have to do on the day is ask for your order and pay.
The Centennial shirts cost £12 for sizes Small to Ex-Large with the 2XL being £13.25. Whilst the others cost £10 for available sizes except Ex-Large which are £11
There will be a stand for the shirts on the Saturday of Convention.
Orders can, of course, be sent by post but the charge for postage and packing is unfortunately £3.50 per shirt.
