Sheila Prior is our District Governor’s Lady
It has become a tradition for the DG’s Lady to choose a Charity and this year my choice will be Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA)
Receiving a diagnosis of Breast Cancer and the subsequent surgery required is a difficult time for any patient and their family. While the treatment for the disease is available on the NHS there is often a lack of support or information about the options available to these patients as well as the opportunity to talk to someone who has gone or is going through the same experience.
The BRA charity started in 2004 when a number of nurses identified how little information or support there was for newly diagnosed Breast Cancer patients contemplating breast reconstruction surgery and the impact it had on them and their families, in this area. It was in recognition of this that the BRA meetings and the charity itself were conceived.
Although based in Chelmsford, Essex, the charity covers patients attending from all over East Anglia. The BRA charity enables the provision of equipment and services in addition to those provided by the hospital. Over the years practical and emotional support and advice have been provided to thousands of women undergoing mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Fund raising events continue to raise money for particular projects, for instance, up to date equipment for the high dependency bay on the ward, a microscope to enable surgeons to join small blood vessels during surgery, a music system for the patients in the post op ward to name just a few things the money has been used for recently.
I believe that this charity offers great support for the patients and their families in East Anglia undergoing this type of surgery and have therefore nominated this charity to support during this coming year
